Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve found that many homeowners in Massachusetts have the same questions about exterior washing services. Read below to find the answers to your most frequently asked questions.

Why does my roof have black streaks?

Most homeowners think that the black streaks on their roof are dirt and are shocked to find out that it’s actually a cyanobacteria called Gloeocapsa Magma. The algae lives by eating the limestone filler of your shingles. So while it looks like dirt, those black streaks are far more destructive. Roof algae can reduce the life of your shingles by 30%.

Do store bought products work to clean the roof of my home?

We urge you to look carefully at both the ingredients and the process that the manufacturer recommends. It’s often necessary to buy several bottles of product to cover an average size roof. The chemicals in the product may not be safe for pets or plants and often make shingles brittle, causing them to break more easily. And they may go against the recommendations of professional roofing associations who discourage their use and can void any warranties.

Can roof cleaning save me money?

Yes, algae and fungus grow on your roof and eat the limestone, so it shortens the life of your shingle roof. By cleaning your roof every few years, you can extend the life of your roof by up to 30%. Insurance companies are cancelling homeowner’s insurance policies if there is any visible moss, lichen or algae on your roof. The algae also turns your roof black making it less reflective. It retains heat, and  your energy bill will go up! Last but not least, it improves the curb appeal of your house. By cleaning the exterior of your house before you sell, it will earn you top dollar on your sale!

What is the best way to clean stains off concrete?

Concrete can stain easily because it has lots of pores. Once algae, rust, oil, or any kind of dirt seeps in, the best way to clean it is by applying a cleaning solution and gently scrubbing the debris away. A high pressure hose directs pressure into the pores and can cause concrete to pit. It’s also very common for pressure washers to leave streaks on concrete because of their narrow spray. We use a special brush that looks like a carpet cleaner that we sweep back and forth over your concrete, leaving it looking like new. There’s no comparison between concrete we clean and concrete cleaned with a pressure washer.
